On December 2, 1994, 28-year-old Terrie Ladwig was beaten and strangled in the apartment she shared with her husband on Adelaide Street, Concord. Her Ludwig was a transgender woman who lived with her husband, Navy Petty Officer Stephen Ludwig.
James Grimsley, 55, was arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday and charged with murder in Ludwig’s death by Contra Costa County prosecutors, officials say. Originally from Oregon, Grimsley was employed as a truck driver in Salt Lake City at the time of his arrest.
“The motive is unclear,” Concord Police Lt. Sean Donnelly told SFGATE Wednesday. “There was no evidence of forcible entry, and it is presumed that the victim entered the apartment.”
The victim’s husband, Stephen Ludwig, found the body of Terry Ludwig in December 1994 after returning from a mission on the USS Paasche submarine. At the time, same-sex marriage was not yet legal in California, and after news of her death broke, media scrutiny focused more on her marriage than on Ludwig’s murder. was not a suspect in Police did not name the suspect at the time.
Stephen Ludwig told reporters that his wife had planned a gender confirmation process at the time of her death.The couple married in Reno the summer before she died.
“I was lonely, she was lonely,” Stephen Ludwig told reporters. “For the most part, we enjoyed each other’s company.”
A month after Ludwig’s death, Stephen was given a “non-honorary” discharge from the Navy following an investigation into having a same-sex relationship. Same-sex marriage was legalized in California in 2013 and in Nevada in 2014.
“She was a great woman, had a great personality, and made people laugh,” Terry Ludwig’s friend Brittany Shoras told ABC7 after hearing the news this week. , she brightened my day. We talked about transgender issues and laws that weren’t there then. Today we are.”
Authorities have not released any evidence linking Grimsley to Ludwig.
“There was forensic evidence from the scene, in addition to many interviews conducted during the initial investigation,” Donnelly said. It could come from the office or from us after arraignment.”
Grimsley is being held in a Salt Lake County jail on a $1 million warrant and will be turned over to Contra Costa County this week, police say.
