An elderly Las Vegas couple was found dead in Death Valley National Park last week, officials said.

Officials from various law enforcement departments in Inyo County responded to a call from 73-year-old Las Vegas resident Paul Fisher on January 13, the National Park Service wrote in a press release. Fisher reportedly told the 911 operator that he had just killed his wife, 72-year-old Mary Fisher, after which he said he intended to commit suicide and told the operator where they were. talked.

Law enforcement officers from the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Inyo County Coroner’s Office, National Park Service, California Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Land Management responded and found the couple dead. Paul Fisher had left a note in the couple’s car explaining his wife’s chronic health condition.

According to the FBI, the desire to “save victims” from illness or disability is one of the primary motivations behind domestic murders and suicides. Disability rights advocates argue that viewing domestic murder-suicide as “mercy murder” dehumanizes the disabled and glorifies the perpetrator’s behavior.

Murders are rare in Death Valley. According to the Los Angeles Times, the first murder in modern memory occurred at the eastern end of the park in 2020.
