Whiskey Advocate: Whiskey Auction Leader of the Year

January 9, 2023

Whiskey Advocate has released its 2022 list of the world’s 20 leading auction houses, ranked by the most expensive bottles of whiskey sold in 2022. The rules are simple, winning bids for single bottles are shown without a buyer’s premium, excluding keg sales and multiple bottle lots. Prices are converted to US dollars using xe.com’s exchange rate from the date of each auction.

Hundreds of the finest whiskey auctions were held around the world in 2022, but competition was so fierce that some major auction houses simply couldn’t participate. The specific whiskeys are 11 Scotch whiskeys (including 9 Macallan), 6 Japanese whiskeys, 2 American whiskeys, and 1 Irish whiskey.

That year, auction houses had to contend with global economic volatility affecting bids, such as a stronger dollar and weaker sterling, leading to more unsold bottles. Compare previous listings from 2021 and 2020 to see which auction houses feature the world’s most coveted whiskey collections. Here’s the full story.
