Press release

Des Moines, Iowa — Wednesday, February 1, 2023 — While much of Des Moines is still covered in snow, spring is approaching, and it’s the perfect time for residents to start planning to add natural beauty to their homes. Orders for Tiny Trees 2023 began this morning, allowing Des Moines residents to order up to five free trees to plant on their property.

“Tiny Trees are a great way to grow our urban forests,” said Shane McKillan, a forester in Des Moines. “There is nothing like planting a tree with your family and watching it grow over the years. You are doing something positive and helping to make Des Moines greener.” increase.”

Tiny Trees has donated thousands of trees each year since its inception in 2017, and last year’s event set a new record of donating nearly 12,000 trees to over 2,000 residents.

“As property owners, we can enjoy all the natural and aesthetic benefits of wood while contributing to the overall improvement of our city,” said public works director Jonathan Gano. “These trees are already having a huge impact on our urban forests and will only improve as this program continues.”

This year, you’ll be able to choose from eight tree species, including six new options not offered last year. Tiny Trees 2023 species are Black Oak, Northern Pecan, River Birch, Shagbark Hickory, Choke Cherry, Gray Dogwood, White Spruce and Bold Cypress.

Residents must place orders by April 28th and pick up will be May 13th from 8am to noon at Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Avenue). Order now at DSM.city/TinyTrees.
