Now that Google has announced the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, it’s only a matter of time before the company introduces an affordable alternative to these phones, the Google Pixel 7a.
Nothing has been officially confirmed about this handset yet, but it’s likely to come and we have some idea of what to expect. Based on early leaks, along with what we know about the Pixel 7 and past models.
Here are all the leaks and our educated guesses. Below that I’ve included a wish list of things I want in a Google Pixel 7a.

Still, we believe that May 2023 is probably the earliest that the Pixel 7a will arrive, and even if it’s announced, it could ship later.
That said, there was mention of the Google Pixel 7a on Amazon. It’s not that far along, but it’s another sign that Midranger is indeed heading into 2023, and could mean it’s landing by the middle of the year.
An unnamed Google phone is also registered in the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) database. This usually happens within a few months of the phone’s launch. The listing doesn’t give specifics, but it does include a serial number similar to the one attached to the Pixel 7a.
There are no pricing rumors, but given that the Pixel 7 is priced the same as the Pixel 6, it’s possible Google will price the Pixel 7a the same as the Pixel 6a. This translates to a price of $449 / £399 / AUD $749.
It could cost as much as the Google Pixel 6a (Image credit: TechRadar / Stephen Lambrechts) Google Pixel 7a news and leaks So far, there haven’t been many leaks about the Pixel 7a, but thanks to unofficial renderings based on leaked information, we have an idea of what the phone might look like.
Some of these – from leakers @OnLeaks and SmartPrix (opens in new tab) – You can see it below and, of course, it shows a phone that looks a lot like the Pixel 7, actually the Pixel 6a.
The dimensions are apparently 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0 mm (rising to 10.1 mm at the camera ridge) and there’s no hint of a 3.5 mm headphone port. The only other detail that comes along with the rendering is that the Pixel 7a will apparently come in shades of white and dark gray.

More recently, real-world photos of the Pixel 7a have surfaced, matching the rendering shown above. You can see them in the tweet embedded below, along with a list of expected specs for the smartphone.
Beyond that, one leak we ran into came courtesy of a fairly reliable leaker, Digital Chat Station.
Via machine translation, they claim that Google is working on a small-screen flagship codenamed “Neila.” It features a flat display, a single-lens punch-hole camera, and a design similar to other recent Pixels.
That doesn’t give us much and it’s even possible they didn’t mention the Pixel 7a – because they didn’t use that name and describe it as a flagship – but Otherwise expect a phone call.. to fit that description.
Along with an aluminum camera bar like the Pixel 7 and the Tensor G2 chipset that phone offers, it’s likely to have an overall similar look. Beyond that, you never know what to expect.
The same source claims elsewhere (opens in new tab) A Pixel phone with a ceramic body is in the works. While they describe the device as a flagship, they also mention 9to5Google’s camera placement. (opens in new tab) links to a phone that appears to be a Pixel 7a.
The device is codenamed ‘Lynx’ and appears to have a 50MP primary sensor, a 64MP telephoto sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide camera.
The phone also appears to support 5W wireless charging. This marks the first time an A-series model can charge wirelessly, and like the rest of the Pixel 7 series, it uses the Tensor G2 chipset.
Take those claims with a pinch of salt, though, as they end up with different specs that don’t really add up. I can hear you.
Still, this probably isn’t the Pixel 7 Ultra or the Pixel 8 given it has slower wireless charging speeds and uses the same chipset. So whatever this leaked phone is, some of those specs seems to be wrong.
Another leak pointing to a dual-lens 64MP + 13MP rear camera, 90Hz refresh rate screen and 5W wireless charging gives us more clues.
what we want to see There are five things Google can do to make the Pixel 7a significantly better than the Pixel 6a. If Google wants to ensure 7a is a success, it should:
1. Set the refresh rate to 90Hz Google Pixel 6a stuck at 60Hz refresh rate (Image credit: Future) Pixel 6a’s refresh rate remains at 60 Hz. I’m not expecting 120Hz from the Google Pixel 7a, but a boost to 90Hz would be nice.
That said, Google is reluctant to do this, as it matches the standard Pixel 7 in terms of refresh rate, making the phone more differentiated.
2. Upgrade to 50MP camera The last few Pixel A-line generations all feature the same 12.2MP main camera (also used by numbered Pixels before the Pixel 6), and it’s a reasonable snapper, but the upgrade has been delayed. increase.
Google has used better 50MP cameras in its recent flagship Pixel phones, so it’s nice to see an upgrade here. Do not rely on it, as it may be too close to the Pixel 7 for Google’s taste.
However, there are plenty of other sensors to consider, and a number of 12.2 to 50MP ranges for Google to consider, which sets the 7a apart from its predecessors in the camera department.
3. Extend battery life Google Pixel 6a doesn’t last long between charges (Image credit: Future) In our Google Pixel 6a review, we found that the phone struggled to get through the day. That’s the minimum we’d expect from a smartphone.
The good news is that the phone will likely use the Tensor G2 chipset, which is more efficient than the original Tensor in the Pixel 6a, so it’s likely to improve.
4. Faster charging At just 18W, the Pixel 6a certainly isn’t fast charging. Even the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro aren’t the fastest chargers, but they support 30W, so they’re at least more reasonable. This is an upgrade we hope the Pixel 7a will also offer.
I think the chances of that happening are medium. This isn’t a big enough feature that Google would necessarily want to keep for its flagship, but it could also drive up the price, which the company may be trying to avoid.
5. Low price Speaking of pricing, the Pixel 6a was a little overpriced for the specs offered. Especially since it launched well after the Pixel 6, the price dropped, so you might be able to get that phone for the same price.
As such, we’re hoping the Pixel 7a will either drop in price, or get a spec boost enough to justify its price tag. Or, if any of these fail, the company could cope by launching his 7a earlier in the release year than the Pixel 6a. Doing so might rank high among his best Pixel smartphones.
