Gov. Healy orders flag for half of Birmingham senators’ staff

BOSTON – Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healy has ordered the United States and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-mast on all state buildings until sundown on Burial Day, in honor of life and death. The legacy of former Senate Speaker Thomas F. Birmingham, who passed away on January 20, 2023.

“Senator Thomas Birmingham was a great civil servant who was dedicated to moving Massachusetts forward. He was bright, curious, and able to deal with a wide variety of people. He roamed the chambers of power and privilege. But he stayed true to his roots and never forgot where he came from or what mattered. His death is a great loss to the Commonwealth and my heart goes out to his wife Selma. , his daughters and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed,” Governor Healy said in a statement.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll tweeted: He loved his hometown and wanted to make life better for the working people in this state. He extends his condolences to his family and friends.

Birmingham was 73 when he died.

He served in the Massachusetts Senate from January 1991 to December 2002.

He served as President of the Senate from January 1996 to December 2002.

This Governor’s Order applies to:

1. The main or administrative building of each federal public institution (e.g. city hall)

2. Other state-owned or state-owned buildings

3. All state military installations
