Half of the customers in the Sacramento Municipal Utility District were in the dark Sunday morning after high winds blew power lines and trees overnight.
As of 6 a.m., SMUD reported that 320,260 of its approximately 650,000 customers were affected by the power outage in the Sacramento area. This is a total of 817 outages reported. Unlike most of Northern California, Sacramento has its own power company. SMUD is the city’s long-standing community-owned power company. PG&E handles natural gas in the region.
SMUD said in a statement, “Due to severe weather, many power outages have occurred. “Our crews are assessing the damage and working to restore power to the affected areas.”
As of 9:30 am, power is slowly being restored across the region. SMUD reported that 258,227 customers are still without power.
Sacramento was hit with high winds Saturday night, with gusts up to 70 miles per hour recorded by the National Weather Service. Wind warnings are in effect for the Sacramento Valley, northern San Joaquin Valley, Carquines Strait and Delta, Northeast Foothills/Sacramento Valley, and Mother Road until 1:00 pm Sunday, but the window of respite from wind damage will be short-lived. Strong southerly winds are forecast for Sunday night through Monday morning.
In addition to winds, residents should expect two to four inches of rain from atmospheric river events to saturate the Central Valley through Tuesday. Three to nine inches of water in foothills and mountains. is expected. This means that runoff flowing downstream can lead to flood conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a flood warning for the Sacramento area through 4 p.m. Wednesday.
