Partner Contents: At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023, Huawei Wireless MAE Product Line Vice President Calvin Zhao delivered a keynote speech titled “Intelligent RAN, Enabling Intelligent Networks” at the RAN Intelligence Industry Roundtable . Zhao pointed out that network intelligence has become a key strategy for most global operators. Based on IntelligentRAN, Huawei’s intelligent solutions (i-series solutions) bring value to intelligent service operations, network optimization, and simplified O&M. Huawei will continue to invest and cultivate more innovative applications, and work with global carriers to bring wireless network intelligence to life.
Network intelligence has become a hot topic in the industry
Today, network intelligence and automation are top industry priorities and are becoming the backbone of operators’ development strategies.
3GPP, the most important mobile communication standards body, released the autonomous network classification level standard in Release 17, and began working on proposals and research on intelligent architecture and interfaces, and new service applications for wireless networks in Release 18.
Commercial Deployment of IntelligentRAN Achieves Breakthrough
In 2022, Huawei launched IntelligentRAN and i-series solutions with innovative architectures such as iPowerStar, iFaultCare, iHashBAND and 5GtoB Suite. Since then, Huawei has held a series of discussions on strategy, architecture, and value solutions with operators around the world. Huawei has also cooperated with more than 30 operators in Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East, making breakthroughs in the commercial deployment of wireless intelligence.
iFaultCare Pinpoint faults and get to the root cause. In a city in Anhui, China, iFaultCare is widely applied. By introducing intelligent fault identification and diagnostics into the operator’s workflow, iFaultCare reduced work orders by over 20%. Annual O&M costs for operators are expected to be reduced by millions of RMB.
ihashband Provides optimal user experience and capacity in multi-band, multi-site, heterogeneous networks. In indoor scenarios such as parking lots in Germany, iHashBAND provided smart carrier aggregation, improving the average UE recognition rate by 66%, greatly enhancing the user experience in indoor areas with deep coverage. In rural and suburban areas, the smart carrier selection solution has improved the downlink user experience four times his, ensuring smooth HD video playback for cell-edge users.
iPowerStar Innovatively apply multi-purpose coordinated energy saving to achieve the best balance between user experience and energy consumption. In collaboration with Middle Eastern operators, iPowerStar achieved average energy savings of about 15% in wireless networks while keeping his KPIs stable. Such experiences are replicated and facilitated at the group level.
IntelligentRAN will continue to evolve
Huawei will continue to explore new capabilities for the IntelligentRAN value direction.
From intelligent multi-band to intelligent multi-antenna: A channel prediction feature is introduced to empower Huawei’s Extra Large Antenna Array (ELAA) with precise alignment and high-speed tracking to ensure a consistent experience among all network users.
From periodic failure O&M to scenario-based warranty: Digital twins are built to accurately simulate extreme scenarios and automatically prepare contingency plans for one-off optimization during critical events.
From energy savings in common scenarios to detailed energy savings in all scenarios: Intelligent energy-saving policy orchestration formulates energy-saving policies in every scenario to maximize energy-saving effects.
From Agile Service Provisioning to Service Experience Assurance: Through service capability identification and dynamic resource forecasting, second-level service experience visualization and minute-level dynamic resource allocation capabilities are built to achieve deterministic service experience.
At the end of his speech, Mr. Zhao called for joint industry efforts in terms of developing architectures, standards, and applications to enable wireless network intelligence. Huawei Launches Extensive Collaboration with Industry Partners to Expand the Deployment of Wireless Intelligent Applications, Create More Innovative Applications, Define Intention-Driven Open Interfaces, and Build an Open Ecosystem We look forward to working together to advance Intelligent World 2030.
