Kansas legislators resume session

The 2023 Legislative Session is officially underway.

Lion County legislators are adjusting to new commissions in some cases. His 17th District Senator, Jeff Longbine, is not on that list. While he remains a member of the Financial Institutions Commission and the Federal and State Affairs Commission, he believes there is a lot of work slated for both commissions, especially the Federal and State Affairs Commission.


Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee is District 60 Representative Mark Schreiber.

Schreiber is also involved in education. energy, utilities, telecommunications; and a brand new Legislative Modernization Commission.

Burlington’s 76th District Representative Eric Smith is Vice Chair of the Commission on Corrections and Juvenile Justice. One of Smith’s primary focuses is mental health reform.

Smith also served on the Judiciary Committee with Schreiber and currently serves on the House Waters Committee.

District 13 Representative Duane Droge was also assigned to the Social Welfare Budget and Welfare Reform Committee. He also joins the Legislative Modernization Committee with Schreiber.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s state address is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
