An independent assessment of the student-athlete welfare, communications and concerns of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Track and Field team has been completed and discussed and possible action taken on the UH Board of Trustees (BOR) meeting agenda on March 23. College Sports Solutions (CSS), a Georgia-based consulting firm specializing in college athletics, was hired by the BOR to investigate climate and behavior allegations within the UH football program. The motion was filed at a public briefing by the Hawaii Senate Ways and Means and Higher Education Commission on January 7, 2022.
CSS interviewed over 20 individuals and collected hundreds of pages of documents during the research. The report includes a detailed timeline (pages 11-14) beginning when the concern was first raised by a football student-athlete, outlining the university’s escalating response up to the Senate briefing. It has been.
In response to the questions posed by the BOR (pages 15-21), CSS provided the following findings:
- There was no criminal activity. Do not violate any NCAA, Mountain West Conference or Big West Conference rules and regulations. Also, the BOR policy was not ignored or circumvented. (16 pages)

- Appropriate policies and procedures are in place to “listen, address and respond to student-athlete complaints and problems.” (9 pages)
- The Athletics Department is committed to “improving the communication of these policies and procedures and encouraging student-athletes to voice their thoughts and concerns about their sport and their overall well-being and well-being in athletic, academic and well-being.” You can improve medically and personally.” (page 9)
At the BOR’s request, the report also includes a list of recommendations (pages 23-25). These include improving communication with student-athletes, improving mental health support, establishing a department-wide set of standards of conduct for all coaches, and working diligently to find a permanent solution to the closure of Aloha Stadium. The Athletics Department has submitted an initial response to the BOR regarding plans to adopt the recommendations.
Claims Related to the UH Basketball Program
The CSS was also asked by the BOR to investigate allegations made at the January 7 Senate briefing regarding the treatment of student-athletes in the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The report’s findings show that our response to concerns is timely and substantive, and follows all appropriate processes (pages 19-21).
