Taiwan’s computing hardware giant MSI hit by ransomware (opens in new tab) Last week’s attack, but downplaying its impact.
PCMag discovered a report filed by MSI with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE). The report details the incident, including a discussion of the data MSI may have obtained in the attack and the impact it could have on your business.
“After detecting that some information systems were being attacked by hackers, MSI’s IT department initiated information security defense mechanisms and recovery procedures,” the company also reported. [sic] An anomaly to relevant government authorities,” MSI said.
no major impact Other than that, there are few details of the attack. We don’t know exactly when the incident happened (it could have happened months ago), what systems and endpoints the company encrypted, or whether sensitive data was obtained in the attack.
MSI said the cyberattack had no “significant” operational or financial impact, stating:
“Currently, there is no significant financial or operational impact on our business. We are also strengthening our network and infrastructure information security management measures to ensure data security.”
However, BleepingComputer reports that it warns users to obtain BIOS and firmware updates from official sources.
“MSI urges users to obtain firmware/BIOS updates only from the official website and not use files from sources other than the official website,” the company said.
Earlier this week, the Money Message ransomware gang broke into some of MSI’s systems, claiming the stolen files will be leaked online next week if the company refuses to pay a $4 million ransom.
The company has not disclosed who was behind the attack, but it claims that an attacker known as Money Message broke into MSI’s systems and stole some files. They demanded $4 million to keep the files out.
