YourArlington, a hyper-local non-profit digital-only news site covering Arlington, Massachusetts, is looking for a part-time Assistant Editor. We are looking for someone who is proficient in content management systems or is a quick learner and has journalism experience.
My primary responsibility is to be able to rewrite/edit email messages and news releases and post them with headlines and photos/captions as needed. This includes cropping and resizing photos.
This site uses Joomla! and needs someone who knows the platform or is technically inclined and can easily learn the basics of the system. We also ask for:
- Good overall reading and writing skills.
- Knowledge of the role responsible news media play in democracy.
- sharp news judgment;
- Familiarity with Arlington, Massachusetts, or similar local communities.
- Occasional reports, online and/or in person, on local events, particularly afternoon or evening government meetings; and
- A person with reliable transportation and the ability to work without a physical office.
Starting salary is expected to be $20-$25 per hour depending on experience, averaging less than 20 hours per week.
As is true of everyone who works for YA, a small but growing non-profit organization, this is an independent contractor position and no health insurance or other benefits are provided.
