After police beat Tyre Nichols to death in Memphis, Summerfield United Methodist pastor Heron Gaston told Connecticut police officers why he was being stopped during a traffic stop. We plan to introduce a bill to Congress that requires motorists to be accounted for. To promote “positive interactions from the start”.

“I’ve been pulled over here at least six or seven times while parked in the church driveway.”

“But you don’t have to tell the police who you are for them to treat you with dignity and respect.”

Gaston on Sunday shared his experience at a gathering at his church to discuss Nichols’ death.

He added on Facebook:

It was incredibly heartbreaking to watch the devastating and horrific attack on Tyre Nichols at the hands of those entrusted with protecting and serving our community. My deepest condolences to his beloved family, friends and community. The actions of these officers are undoubtedly immense and have no logical justification. In particular, no human should be slaughtered and murdered in cold blood at the hands of law enforcement agencies called upon to represent professionalism in service. Societies, especially minority communities, need not be retraumatized by state-sanctioned violence. This hurts. As a nation, as a people, we are better than that.
