Bay County-based SK Siltron CSS has announced plans to expand production of much-needed silicon carbide wafers in August 2021. This wafer is considered the future of the industry due to its ability to efficiently transfer energy. The company chose Michigan over competing states because of its skilled workforce and proximity to automakers. The project, supported by a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant, is expected to create a total of 150 jobs. To date, the company has hired over 100 employees for new positions.

“SK Siltron CSS is thrilled to expand our presence in Michigan and strengthen our commitment to the Bay City community at large, while creating well-paying jobs and new investment opportunities. Demand for power semiconductors is growing rapidly as automakers enter the electric vehicle market and telecom companies expand their 5G capabilities. SK Siltron CSS manufactures special wafers made of Silicon Carbide (SiC) that can be used in electric vehicles. SiC wafers are more efficient at high power handling and heat transfer than regular silicon. When used in EV system components, this property enables efficient transfer of electricity from the battery to the motor, increasing EV mileage by 5-10%.

The project will bring high-paying jobs in high-tech manufacturing, from semi-skilled operators to engineers, and continue to strengthen Michigan’s automotive, mobility, and advanced manufacturing industries. The semiconductor industry already contributes $4.6 billion to Michigan’s total regional project value, making Michigan one of the nation’s top states for semiconductor manufacturing. The addition of new jobs and this significant investment by SK Siltron CSS in Michigan solidifies the company’s presence and creates a stronger path for future investments here in the state.

Today’s celebration comes just one month after President Joe Biden attended a virtual signing event for the state’s CHIPS law enforcement directive. President Biden was joined online by Senators Debbie Stabenow and Senator Gary Peters, and at Hemlock Semiconductor’s manufacturing facility in Thomas Township by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Congressman Dan Kildee. participated directly. The executive order marks an important step to increase domestic chip production closer to automakers and other manufacturers, foster innovation, reduce inefficiencies and avoid costly delays.
