Yeah, that really threw me off. No way Jim Treliving would do anything like this.
I met Jim Treliving many years ago, I was still in high school and got a job at his very first expansion restaurant (ie the second Boston Pizza restaurant he ever opened)… He was a super nice guy and really just wanted everyone to have a good time. He seemed to genuinely care about all the employees in the restaurant.
Highly recommend his autobiography as well, it’s an interesting read.
