The new facility is part of a US$300 million expansion announced by the company in July 2021, Evertiq reported. The expansion will double Michigan’s workforce and quadruple its manufacturing capacity over the next few years.

SK Siltron CSS manufactures silicon carbide (SiC) wafers for the electric vehicle sector. SiC wafers are more efficient at high power handling and heat transfer than regular silicon. Using SiC-based products in EV system components enables efficient transfer of electricity from the battery to the motor, increasing EV range by 5% to 10%, the company said.

In a press release, SK Group said its new Bay City manufacturing facility underscores the conglomerate’s commitment to Michigan and reaffirms its plans to increase U.S. investments and assets to more than US$50 billion and create tens of thousands of jobs. It says it will. SK Group companies now hold his US$13 billion in US investments and assets and have over 4,000 US employees.

SK Siltron CSS CEO Jianwei Dong said in a press release: This major investment in Bay City will further increase the level of confidence not only for our customers, but for the entire electric vehicle value chain, accelerating the pace of EV adoption. ”
