Sony seems to be gearing up to launch the highly anticipated Sony A6700 camera for photographers and according to rumors of new specs, it could soon become one of the best cameras for beginners.
According to the trusted Sony Alpha Rumors (opens in new tab) the Sony A6700 combines the 26MP APS-C sensor found in the pro-friendly Sony FX30 camcorder with AI-driven autofocus features found in the recent Sony ZV-E1.
Both the FX30 and ZV-E1 are video-focused cameras, but Sony’s Alpha series is traditionally designed for photographers, while the A6000 series is a more affordable collection for enthusiasts.
Other rumored A6700 specs that Sony Alpha Rumors says are “90% sure” include 7 stops of in-body image stabilization (helpful for handheld shooting) and the ability to shoot 4K/120p slow motion video (but small 1.19x crop).
The design doesn’t seem to change much from the 2019 Sony A6600, but there could be some changes. These seem to include a “redesigned, more ergonomic” grip and a new scroll wheel below the front shutter button that was traditionally used to control the aperture. .
Not so good news, but Sony Alpha Rumors claims that the A6700 is “about 3mm deeper and 4mm taller” than the A6600. Still, Sony’s Alpha cameras are known for being compact, which makes his A6700 pretty small for an interchangeable-lens camera. For example, the current A6600 is less than 70mm tall and weighs just over 500g including the battery.
So if you’re looking for a new travel or family camera and don’t know what to do now that the best DSLRs are no longer being replaced, it might be worth waiting a few months for the rumored A6700. Sony Alpha Rumors claim to be announced “early July” ahead of a full release in August.

But the A6700’s potential combination of Sony’s latest AI-powered autofocus, in-body image stabilization, and a wide range of affordable E-mount lenses might make it worth paying a little extra.

Like the Canon EOS R10, the A6700 should finally fill a gap in Sony’s camera lineup for families, vacations, or just anyone who wants to snap everyday life with quality beyond smartphones.
Also, given that Sony has a huge advantage over Canon when it comes to third-party lenses, if the price is right, the A6700 should be a very popular new model for non-professionals.
