Sorry OLED TV Fans – Bigger Sizes Won’t Get Cheaper Anytime Soon

(opens in new tab)The next-generation ‘10.5G’ factory technology is believed to be able to produce larger OLED TV panels cheaper, which will drive down the price of OLED.

However, as reported by Korea Bizwire, (opens in new tab)the new facility has reportedly been delayed until 2028, although LG Display has not confirmed anything. That’s a big delay. As a result of the holdup, the earliest we can expect to see results is 2029.

On the other hand, another thing a ‘10.5G’ OLED factory could potentially do is get even bigger than 100 inches. At least, this was claimed in 2017 when it was first announced. Also, LG Display has hinted at the arrival of a “super-large” OLED TV, so if it finally does, we’ll be looking forward to it. .

OLED TV prices have generally fallen fairly steadily in recent years, but rising inflation has stalled these price deductions. For example, there is little price difference between the new LG C3 and LG C2 launch prices.

What is “10.5G” in the first place?

When we talk about manufacturing 8.5G or 10.5G, we are basically talking about the size of the mother glass. The higher the number, the larger the mother glass, which has two advantages. It’s more efficient (you can produce more TVs at once) and you have more flexibility in sizing.

A 10.5G facility could potentially produce four 77-inch OLEDs per mother glass instead of two per 8.5G mother glass. Each 77-inch screen costs less because it speeds up the process. Or maybe the larger mother glass means we can make one 113-inch OLED that we couldn’t do at all before.

As more and more people buy large TVs ranging from 75″ to 98″ for home theater use, it is important for OLEDs to remain competitively priced. Hopefully this delay doesn’t leave technology behind.
