FAIRFIELD — A shovel was set up at the St. Catherine Center for Special Needs on Friday. The center aims to double the space available to non-profit organizations with an expansion of its facilities.
Virginia Weir, the center’s assistant director of communications, said the organization, which serves individuals with disabilities, needs more room to offer individualized programs. Saint Catherine raised her $5 million to double the space and began its construction on Friday.
According to Weir, the wet weather prevented St. Catherine from hosting its landmark event outdoors, so it chose to host it at the gym. She noted that Bishop Frank Cajano of the Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport blessed the new building and that a wheelbarrow of dirt was brought inside to properly commemorate the occasion.
The project “allows for more space and better programming,” Weir said.
Weir said the nonprofit serves 44 students and adult participants in two programs. One is St. He’s a school at Catherine Academy and the other is an adult program from when he’s 21 to when he’s 32.
“The main goal is to help each individual become more independent, and it’s completely individualized to each person,” she said. For others, it could mean reading stories to friends, improving your math skills, or gaining enough professional experience to get a job.”
Most importantly, Weir said the attention and service St. Catherine provides is a one-on-one program that is personalized to each person it serves.
The nonprofit moved to its current Tamore Drive location in 2007 and added an adult program in 2015, Weir said. The facility is no longer big enough, she said.
“We are bursting at the seams,” she said. “So after several years of strategic planning, we launched a campaign called Building for the Future.”
The plan has led the nonprofit to conclude that expanding its current location is the best option, Weir said.
“It’s not that important to increase enrollment, but it will open up additional spots,” she said. “To make sure the program is the best it can be.”
The expanded facility has space for a hydroponic garden and a commercial kitchen, and Weir says that whatever each individual’s ability to serve, this added space will help them achieve it. added that it can help
Weir said the process of obtaining permits and approvals has been completed and will likely be next year when completed.
“It’s very similar to the current one, but built,” she said. “This is the elegance of the whole plan.”
