EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The mayor of a border city in Texas declared a state of emergency on Saturday, voicing concerns about the community’s ability to handle the expected influx of migrants across the southern border.

El Paso Mayor Oscar Reiser has declared a state of emergency to ensure cities on the U.S. border with Mexico have access to the additional resources they anticipate needing after the Title 42 expulsion ends Dec. 21. issued a proclamation, reported the El Paso Times.

Lieser previously resisted issuing a state of emergency, but said he took action after seeing people on downtown streets with temperatures dropping below freezing, The New York Times reported.

“That’s not how we want to treat people,” Reeser said at a press conference on Saturday night.

Friday’s ruling by the DC Court of Appeals for the Circuit means restrictions that have prevented hundreds of thousands of immigrants from seeking asylum in the United States in recent years will continue to be lifted on Wednesday unless further appeals are filed.

Rieser added that the increase after Wednesday, when daily arrests and street releases could reach up to 6,000 per day, would be “incredible”.

El Paso Deputy Mayor Mario D’Agostino said the declared state emergency would give the city more flexibility to run larger shelter operations and provide additional transportation to asylum seekers.
