On Sunday, the No. 9 Huskies won an 85-77 win over Florida State at the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena with the return of point guard Nika Muhl and alumnus forward Dorka Juhas. looked like myself.
Mule and Juhas have each returned from injury, but head coach Geno Auriemma was not in the squad during Sunday’s game. The show announced that Auriemma will no longer be coaching the game after feeling unwell during the team’s shootaround on Sunday morning.
Associate head coach Chris Daley replaced Auriemma and led the Huskies to a 14-0 record.
Aaliyah Edwards led with a career-high 26 points, followed by Lou Lopez-Senechal with 23 points. Juhas recorded his career-high five blocks in his first game since returning from a broken thumb against Texas on Nov. 14. Mule, who sat out last Sunday’s game against Princeton because of a concussion, recorded 12 of his assists (his fifth in a game this season).
Edwards was named the game’s MVP.
UConn quickly adapted to start Sunday’s game with both Mule and Juhas back in the lineup.
The Huskies opened with a 10-0 run (6 points from Edwards), and Florida State won the first bucket in the 6:02 minute. UConn’s defense was underwhelming as the Seminoles made only three of his 21 field goal attempts in the first quarter.
Juhasz opened UConn’s first quarter three pointers and sprinted to the other side for a block.
The Seminoles fought back in the second quarter, forcing UConn to make two consecutive turnovers on a 6-0 run. The Huskies were scoreless for over three minutes until Lopez Seneschal hit his 3-pointer for the second time of the day to put UConn ahead 33-17.
While Florida State started playing bearish and aggressive, UConn continued to take the lead.
At halftime, UConn led by 23 points. Edwards (18 points in the half) and Lopez Senechal were both in double figures, Mule had nine assists and Jujas was already posting career-high blocks.
UConn’s ball movement looked great with Muhl back on the court. At the break, the Huskies had a total of 17 assists against FSU’s eight total. And with Juhas back in the frontcourt, UConn edged FSU 26-12 in the paint in his first 20 minutes.
The Seminoles were within five in the third quarter when the Huskies ran into turnover problems. After he finished the first half with 8 turnovers, UConn stole his 7th in his third and lost 10 total points. It was UConn’s four straight free throws and a last-second steal from Juhasz that capped FSU’s 9-0 run to end the frame and keep the Huskies’ momentum going.
FSU’s top scorer freshman Tanya Latson (24 points) fouled out at 6:44 in the fourth to make the semifinals within four. However, with UConn setting his 29th consecutive unbeaten record, the Huskies capitalized on his FSU foul his troubles.
After FSU’s McKayla Timpson fouled out with 1:41 remaining, Mule made one of two free throws to make it a seven-point game. UConn finished the game with his 86% shooting from the foul line.
UConn will host Seton Hall at the XL Center on Wednesday, December 21st at noon (SNY).
