Villages hosting 3rd of July events

The Village will hold a Fourth of July Celebration on Monday, July 3 at 5:30 PM in the north parking lot of the 80th Avenue Metra train station at 18001 S. 80th Ave. in Tinley Park. The event is a community celebration featuring live music, food and drink, and fireworks at dusk.

The main reason the Village chose to host the event at the 80th Street Station was the layout of the area, which is more contained than places like McCarthy Park.

Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh said: “Last year, the village was 15 minutes away from canceling its 4th of July celebrations at McCarthy Park due to threats received following the shooting at Highland Park. “Since then, we have been looking for ways to increase safety and efficiency at all our events, especially those that may attract large crowds.”

The new location will have fewer entry and exit points, giving public safety personnel a better chance to manage crowds and stay alert to potential threats.

The 80th Street location has other advantages. This provides participants with better parking options and prevents traffic from flooding the lot, which in the past has caused safety issues and parking inconveniences for residents in surrounding areas.

Metra’s lots are more efficient in this regard, so fewer village resources are required to close roads, post “no parking” signs and generally manage traffic. The village could point to past successes at the location, such as last year’s Oktoberfest celebration, to prove that the location is better suited to hosting large-scale events than a small park. .
