The latest optional update for Windows 11 has caused a number of issues for some users, including reported issues with games and conflicts with antivirus apps.
Let’s start with the apparent misfire of the works patch KB5025305 visited by gamers, as claimed on Reddit (opens in new tab) Flagged by Windows Latest (opens in new tab) .
One Reddit user reported that the game froze after installing the preview update, but the issue was resolved after uninstalling the patch, suggesting that was the culprit. Another user chimed in saying they had the same problem and after several days of troubleshooting, concluded that KB5025305 was the cause of the problem.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there have been some reports of updates failing to install (this is nothing new).
Another flaw reported in the April preview update of Windows 11 was a warning that popped up in Kaspersky Antivirus, stating:
Windows Latest points out that Kaspersky engineers have confirmed that KB5025305 causes this mysterious message to appear. It’s not clear what it actually means for antivirus, but the message should only appear once.
One user suggested that the problem might be Kaspersky’s firewall, and has observed that Windows 11 updates change firewall settings.
Kaspersky forum post (opens in new tab) Our engineers replied that other users were saying that their Windows 11 systems were running slower after the update (for example, jitters when moving the mouse on the desktop).
Analysis: Microsoft should address this issue… At the time of writing this article, no conclusions have been drawn, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Kaspersky’s investigation into the antivirus bug. And obviously the guess that the firewall is unstable is just a guess.
I don’t have any real evidence to suggest that, but people running Kaspersky are concerned about where this error message originates from (and it makes them somehow vulnerable in terms of security). Whether or not – Kaspersky hasn’t elaborated on the issue yet, so we don’t know.
There are only a few scattered reports at the moment about the apparent bugs causing KB5025305 to slow down or freeze the game, so I can’t put too much stock on them. This isn’t the first time that the frame rate has dropped accidentally.
Still, it’s not a big concern at this point, but something to watch out for. Between now and the release of KB5025305, we’ll see if more reports are available for all users running Windows 11.
This optional update will be in full release next week, so Microsoft and Kaspersky will have other issues to work out since it’s an antivirus product that many people use.
However, these issues are not yet documented in Microsoft’s support document listing known issues for KB5025305. I think it’s been brought up and mentioned by now, but it’s possible that Microsoft is quietly investigating.
