Woman killed in North Greenbush fire on Belmeade Street, Wynantskill

NORTH GREENBUSH — An 82-year-old woman died in a Wynantskill house fire early Sunday morning.

A resident of 17 Bellmeade Street was awakened by a strong smell of smoke shortly after 5 a.m. when his smoke detector went off, police said.

Two adults and two dogs escaped safely, but the home occupants told paramedics that another adult was still inside.

Firefighters rushed into the intense fire situation and found the missing resident. However, North Greenbush Police Chief Daniel Keeburn wrote in a release that he was unable to conduct a rescue operation.

The victim’s identity will not be released until the family is notified.

North Greenbush Police and the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety Fire Investigation are conducting an investigation with the assistance of the State Fire Protection Agency. Police said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.

“This is an absolute tragedy no matter what time of the year it happens, but it’s clearly more tragic just before the holidays,” Keeburn wrote. They did such an amazing job despite being so busy, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they did.”

Crews from the Wynantskill, DeFriestville, Porstenkill, Mountain View, East Greenbush Fire Department, and the North Greenbush Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

Keevern said the incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of installing smoke detectors and checking them regularly.

“This could have been even more tragic if other residents hadn’t been woken up by smoke alarms,” he said.
