“Electric vehicles are the present and the future. That’s where engineers are needed, and great engineering talent can make a difference. We have an extraordinary group of people,” says Rashi.
Rashi and Akash’s team is 550 people. An in-house team builds the technology needed for fleet, lidar and QR code management. The team has made his entire fleet IoT-enabled. Finding the right people for the right jobs is a real challenge for startup founders, says Rashi. “And with such a fast-paced job, you need to make quick calls about suitable hiring,” she says.
It hasn’t been a smooth road for Rashi and Akash. They originally wanted to start a dockless cycle service that people could use for short trips. But they realized that the infrastructure, the weather, and the prevailing mindset were not conducive to cycling. When Covid hit, their EV bike rental business had barely started to recover.
But Rashi could not imagine giving up. “When you’re involved in something of global importance, such as reducing carbon emissions, you can never give up,” she says.
During lockdown, they started getting last-mile delivery orders from local grocery stores. Soon even big e-commerce players started using the service and their business started to grow. Zypp is available today on Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, Blinkit, BigBasket, Amazon, Flipkart, MintraPharmEasy, Delhi, and Spencer.
But there are still many challenges. The EV ecosystem is still in its infancy and the challenge is finding partners to supply the right vehicles. “Last-mile delivery costs are higher[for gasoline vehicles]but many people are not switching to EVs because they do not have a reliable option,” he said.
But the Google program has given her a clearer vision and confidence, she says.
